Bergman Leads Reps in Supporting President Trump's Regulatory Relief

Today, Congressman Jack Bergman led 38 Members of Congress in sending a letter to President Donald Trump, supporting his recent move to cut unnecessary and burdensome agency practices to prepare our nation for a strong economic comeback. On May 19th, President Trump issued an Executive Order on Regulatory Relief to Support Economic Recovery, which directs federal agencies to cut regulatory red tape, improve efficiency, and encourage economic growth in the face of the coronavirus.

In part, the Members noted, "In order to address the impact of the coronavirus, the federal government has adopted hundreds of new regulatory changes, waivers, and flexibilities to overcome inefficiency and deliver timely relief to Americans impacted by the coronavirus. These are goals we should continue to pursue in post-coronavirus governance. For example, the Small Business Administration (SBA) has streamlined access to loans for local employers, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are allowing relaxed policies to expand the use of telehealth, which is critically needed in rural and remote communities. In our effort to combat the coronavirus, we are uncovering the many burdensome agency practices that were not needed in the first place, and we applaud your decision to sideline this red tape."

In recent months, federal agencies have allowed hundreds of regulatory flexibilities which have made the government more nimble in addressing the needs of our nation. This letter offers Congress' support and assistance on the new Executive Order to identify and implement regulatory relief.

The Members of Congress who cosigned this letter with Rep. Bergman were: Chip Roy, Alex X. Mooney, Andy Biggs, Ann Wagner, Ben Cline, Bill Huizenga, Bill Johnson, Bob Gibbs, Daniel P. Meuser, Darin LaHood, David B. McKinley, P.E., David Rouzer, Debbie Lesko, Denver Riggleman, Doug Collins, Fred Keller, Glenn Grothman, Greg Gianforte, Greg Steube, Guy Reschenthaler, John Moolenaar, John Shimkus, Ken Buck, Kevin Hern, Matt Gaetz, Michael Guest, Neal P. Dunn, M.D., Ralph Abraham, M.D. Randy K. Weber, Rodney Davis, Roger Marshall, M.D., Roger Williams, Ron Wright, Scott Perry, Steve King, Ted Budd, Tim Walberg, and Troy Balderson.

This letter received support from Americans for Prosperity, National Taxpayers Union, FreedomWorks, Americans for Tax Reform, and Digital Liberty.

Grover G. Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform said, "President Trump and the Republican Congress brought us strong growth, job creation and increasing wages by reducing taxes and the regulatory burden. We can return America to prosperity the same way. President Trump’s drive for more deregulation—first to fight the virus and second to restore growth — is moving full speed ahead.”

"As American businesses begin to reopen, the president’s Executive Order doubling down on his successful deregulatory agenda will help fuel the economic recovery. We applaud the President, and the members of Congress who signed this letter for their commitment to getting burdensome and unnecessary regulations out of the way," said Brandon Arnold, Executive Vice President for the National Taxpayers Union.

Annie Patnaude, State Director for Americans for Prosperity-Michigan said, “Many of the unnecessary regulatory barriers that hindered COVID-19 emergency response are the same problems that could slow economic recovery. It’s time to clear the way for an economy that can empower everyone to get through this crisis, get back on their feet, and recover stronger."
