Bergman Releases Statement On Violence Against Women Bill
Washington,
April 4, 2019
"On February 15th, authorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) expired. Since taking office I’ve supported extending VAWA, voting multiple times to fully fund and reauthorize the bill, including two attempts in the past year. However, instead of a serious extension proposal, House Democrats have sabotaged this VAWA bill, making its failure in the Senate nearly certain.
"Preventing domestic violence and sexual assault against women should never be politicized. I’m disappointed that instead of a clean authorization bill, Democratic leadership chose to add provisions to this bill that would deny due process and fail to offer necessary protections to victims of domestic violence. I’m glad to see that the Senate is making efforts to reauthorize this bill in a bipartisan fashion, and look forward to supporting a clean VAWA authorization in the future." |
