Bergman Leads Bipartisan Letter to Appropriators on Funding for New Soo Lock

Washington- Today, Congressman Jack Bergman led a letter along with 30 of his colleagues in the House, to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, requesting $75.3 million in funding for the Soo Locks project. Congressman Bergman issued the following release:

"President Trump prioritized the Soo Locks in his Fiscal Year 2020 budget, requesting $75.3 million to begin construction. Today I sent a letter with dozens of my colleagues encouraging House appropriators to follow through on the President's request. The Soo Locks are a single point of failure in a trillion-dollar supply chain, and an unexpected closure would cripple our national economy. After decades of failed attempts, the Soo Locks project is now a reality and I'm thankful to have gained support from so many of my colleagues, as well as the President, for this critical First District project,"said Congressman Bergman.

In December,Congressmen Bergman, Mitchell, and Moolenaar led a letter to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB)requesting the inclusion of Soo Locks construction funding in the President's FY2020 budget.

President Trump included $75.3 million in his FY2020 budget to start construction at the Locks complex. This was a historical moment for the project, marking the first time a President has included a funding request for the construction of a new Poe-sized lock.
