Bergman Introduces Bipartisan Cormorant Relief Act

Congressman Jack Bergman (R-MI01) and Congressman Collin Peterson (D-MN07) reintroduced the Cormorant Relief Act in the 116th Congress. Control of the double-crested cormorant has long been a successful endeavor between state agencies and the Fish and Wildlife Services (FWS) until a court order left Michigan unable to respond to the negative effects these migratory birds have on our fish populations. The following release was issued:
"I'm proud to reintroduce the Cormorant Relief Act as we continue our fight to ensure healthy fisheries throughout Michigan and the country. While FWS works with the states on a way forward to protect our fisheries from the devastating effects of cormorant overpopulation, this bill would provide much needed relief to states like Michigan in the meantime. I'm thankful for the opportunity to work with so many First District sportsmen as we work together to bring this issue to the forefront," said Bergman. In 2018, the House Natural Resources held an oversight hearing on cormorant management in Alpena, Michigan. The Cormorant Relief Act subsequently passed the Committee in July of 2018. |
