Congressman Bergman and Colleagues Send Letter to President Trump Urging Movement on Soo Locks
Washington,
May 7, 2018
Friday, Representatives Bergman, Moolenaar, Mitchell, and Kaptur, led a bipartisan letter to President Donald J. Trump urging his continued commitment to rebuild the Locks in Sault Ste. Marie.
“Since taking office, building a new Poe-sized Lock in Sault Ste. Marie has been my number one infrastructure priority, not only for the First District of Michigan, but for our entire country,” said Bergman. Bergman continued, “Recently I spoke with President Donald J. Trump about the need to build this new Lock, and the impact that even a short-term closure would have on the economy of our state, and the entire nation. I’m encouraged by President Trump’s interest in building a new Lock in Sault Ste. Marie, and I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to move this project forward.” The letter can be found HERE. Congressman Bergman has long advocated for building a new Soo Lock, citing national security implications, steel production, and economic impact both regionally and nationally. Recently, Congressman Bergman authored a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) urging them to use new funding to complete design work and begin construction on a new Poe-sized Lock. More information on that letter can be found HERE. |
