Bergman Opposes Reckless Spending Bill
Washington,
March 22, 2018
Washington - Congressman Jack Bergman released the following statement after opposing today’s spending bill: “Today I voted against the $1.3 Trillion, 2200 page, Omnibus spending package (H.R. 1625 - The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018). While there are provisions in this bill that I have fought to defend and that I agree with, I wanted to highlight a few of the reasons for my opposition. “The people of the First District sent me to Washington to be a leader and stand up for what is right, regardless of politics and partisanship. We know that the status quo is not working for the American people, but politicians in D.C. continue to irresponsibly feed their spending addiction. This ‘Omnibus’ was nothing short of reckless and provides zero answers to our nation’s debt crisis. “Government spending is out of control, and we can’t continue to ‘kick the can down the road’ and expect different results. I wasn’t sent to Washington to represent the Administration or Party leadership—I was sent to work for the people of the 1st District of Michigan. Our budgeting and appropriating process is broken and can no longer be ignored. Our national debt and deficit has gone off the rails. Without change, our mandatory spending will eclipse 100% of the federal budget in the next 40 years, leaving our children and grandchildren an impossible crisis to confront. I’m honored to represent the 1st District of Michigan and will continue to fight for fiscally conservative principles and provide results for northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.” |
