Infrastructure, Economy, and Immigration

Washington - Following President Donald J. Trump's State of the Union address, Congressman Jack Bergman released the following statement:

“Tonight, during the State of the Union, President Trump laid out his vision to keep our country ‘Safe, Strong, and Proud.’ While the approach to these objectives may vary – this is a theme that can unite all Americans.

“President Trump outlined his bipartisan initiative to begin rebuilding our nation’s vital infrastructure—working together we can achieve this monumental task. A 21st Century infrastructure plan should include vital updates in the First District of Michigan, namely rural broadband and building a new Poe-sized Lock in Sault Ste. Marie. Expanding high-speed broadband will invigorate our rural communities, and this is critical to ensuring the First District remains an area where families can live, work, and receive a quality education.

“As President Trump mentioned, the opioid crisis is devastating our country. Rural communities within the First District are disproportionally affected by this epidemic, with no signs of that diminishing. I’m committed to working with our communities to find multi-faceted approaches to battle this epidemic and end this crisis. I’m appreciative of the Administration's commitment in the past on this issue, but I will continue to encourage a more vigorous and engaged approach in the days ahead.

“The President also highlighted the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act which House Republicans passed just a few short weeks ago. We’ve accomplished what many said was impossible. Tax reform will lower the taxes for 90% of Americans while modernizing and simplifying our outdated tax structure. It has already resulted in millions of dollars in bonuses and pay raises for American workers, and will allow business and job growth throughout the entire First District.

“Additionally, President Trump addressed immigration and national security tonight in his vision. Finding a solution to DACA and border security remains a top priority for Congress in the days and weeks ahead. We can no longer ‘kick the can’ when it comes to securing our borders, and the American people sent us to Washington to make tough decisions. It’s time we work together to ensure our borders are secure and that those who wish to contribute and come to our nation legally have a fair and open pathway.

“I look forward to working with President Trump on his vision to achieve a safer, stronger, and prouder America.”
