Bergman Commends USPS for Keeping Local Mail Operations in Kingsford

On Friday, February 21, 2025, the United States Postal Service (USPS) announced that it will be keeping local mail processing operations at the Iron Mountain Processing & Distribution Center (P&DC) in Kingsford, reversing a prior decision to relocate them to Green Bay, WI. This decision comes as part of a new operational strategy by the agency that is projected to generate an additional $3 billion in annual savings nationwide. USPS expects these savings will offset the costs of maintaining local originating mail processing operations in Kingsford.

Following USPS’s announcement, Rep. Bergman stated, "I commend the Postal Service’s decision to keep local mail processing operations in Kingsford. From the outset of the proposed relocation plan, I have been clear that any efforts to restructure the national delivery network cannot come at the expense of our rural and remote communities. Yoopers rely on a timely mail service for everything from VA medications to bank statements, and this announcement by the Postal Service is a long-overdue recognition of this reality. I’m glad the agency reversed course, and I look forward to continuing my work protecting this essential service."

Since USPS first proposed changes to the Iron Mountain P&DC in January 2024 under the Delivering for America plan, Rep. Bergman has been at the forefront of efforts to keep local mail processing operations in Kingsford and prevent their relocation 100 miles away to Green Bay. Engaging with local postal officials and community members who would be most impacted by this misguided move, he has continuously pressed USPS leadership to immediately halt its proposed changes to the Kingsford facility.

USPS’s decision to keep local mail processing operations at the Iron Mountain P&DC is a significant victory for the First District, ensuring continued postal service for the tens of thousands of Upper Peninsula households that depend on it while also protecting the jobs of hardworking employees at the Kingsford facility.
