Bergman Renews Call to Stop Communist China From Purchasing American Farmland On National Agriculture Day
Washington,
March 19, 2024
Today, March 19th, is National Agriculture Day. This day is set aside to honor and appreciate the hard work of farmers, ranchers, fishers, growers, foresters, producers, and all of those in agriculture who contribute so much to the strength of our Nation.
Rep. Jack Bergman renewed his calls for Congress to immediately pass legislation that would stop the Communist Chinese Party from purchasing America's agricultural land. In February of 2023, Bergman joined with Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) in introducing the Prohibition of Agricultural Land for the People’s Republic of China Act. This legislation would prohibit the purchase of public or private agricultural land in the United States by foreign nationals associated with the Government of the People’s Republic of China. Bergman called on House Leadership to immediately pass this legislation and ensure that our farmland and food supply chain is protected from bad actors like the CCP. "Now more than ever, it is imperative that we protect our farmers and agricultural land from adversaries of the United States who wish to do us harm. It's unfathomable that the United States would ever rely on the Communist Chinese Government for our food supply. It's time to stop this agricultural takeover," said Rep. Bergman. This week, Rep. Bergman is meeting in his Washington, D.C., office with Michigan Agriculture leaders from the Michigan Farm Bureau and Michigan Apple Committee to continue direct dialogue with them about the issues facing our agriculture industry. Additionally, Rep. Bergman is a co-sponsor of H.R. 7035, the Death Tax Repeal Act. As stated in its title, this legislation would repeal the death tax, allowing farms to stay in their families without the federal government charging an exorbitant tax that prohibits many younger generations from pursuing a career in farming. |
