Bergman Calls on Senate to Pass House Border Bill

Today, Rep. Jack Bergman issued the following statement:

“It’s long past time the Senate take up H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, to secure our southern border and end this crisis. Our porous border is teetering on the verge of major catastrophe with the rampant rise of crime, fentanyl overdoses, and illegal crossings. Passing a so-called border bill which only allocates a mere 17% of a $118 billion total to securing our border is not the answer. Instead, we need the national security-bolstering measures in H.R. 2 – from its provisions that would restart construction of a border wall to its elimination of catch-and-release.

“We must all join together and demand the Senate immediately pass H.R. 2 to avoid a catastrophic point of no return.”

This week, 19 illegal immigrants were caught in Grand Traverse County and taken to Sault Ste. Marie for processing. Read the story here.

H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act would:

•             Force the Biden Administration to restart construction of the border wall;

•             Deploy technology to the southern and northern border;

•             Increase the number of Border Patrol agents and provide bonus pay;

•             Require transparency of illegal crossings from the Department of Homeland Security;

•             Strengthen current law to protect unaccompanied children from human trafficking;

•             End catch and release;

•             End abuse of executive immigration authority; and

•             Strengthen and streamline the asylum process.
